Texture in Design

Texture - Combo

Texture in design adds depth and movement to a landscape.  You can use texture to bring the eye to a path, a feature, or just a beautiful area of your garden.

Texture - Flax

While touring in Santa Barbara I found a lot of gorgeous plants that can add texture to a design.  Some of them are sharp, some of them are soft, some of them rely on mixing leaf types to show contrast of texture.  All of them use texture to play on the imagination.

Texture - Agave ribs

Take a look at some of these lovely textural plants and how they are used, maybe you can find a place in your garden to add a little texture.

Texture - Fountain Grass

Some plants add texture to your design while swaying in the breeze.  Some plants add texture to your design by drawing the eye around the garden.  Finding your favorite textures and adding them to your garden is fun, and as easy as visiting the beautiful gardens in your area.  We have an amazing resource or ten in the Los Angeles Area.  The Mildred Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA, The Huntington, Descanso Gardens to name a few.

Texture - multi

Take some time to visit and wander, you will be amazed at how much texture you will find all around you.  Once you get the hang of texture, you can add color to the mix.  I’ll share some photos soon with both color that really set off a garden.
